2018 Scottish County Championships

PreviousPage 2 of 4Next

One free week was while you were away Dek and you’ve played every match when Home as you said, so you’ll be on exactly 50%, (currently higher as you’ve just played the last 3)

I know it’s a county rule but for someone who plays every week they are home to possibly miss out just because of a random league schedule with free weeks involved, is completely unfair. Who do we write to?! 🙂

Kenny, I am interested but not sure if I qualify. I have played every Tuesday I’m home on 3/3 rota. I am home for the event in October.

A quick update.....

2 Aberdeen teams have now been entered into the competition. The other entries currently are Dumfries, Moray, Borders, Paisley (1st time entrants). West of Scotland (reigning 3-time winners), Cumbernauld and Edinburgh will confirm their entries shortly.

23 players have stated their interest in taking part. Kenny MacPherson, Jamie McNolty, Barry Smith, Marc Davis, Raymond Murray, Andy Gerrie, Mark Oaten, Gavin McRobb, Dave Thomson, Scott McHardy, Stevie Martin, Darren Walker, Alan Pedelty, Moray Milligan, Stephen Thomson, Ross Crighton, Derek Morrison, Fraser Allan, Davie Goodfellow Jnr, Derek Hudson, Alec Main, Paul Hardy and Patrick Lovie. If anyone else would like to be considered, please get in touch as soon as possible.

I would now ask if I could have 2 players willing to step up and captain each squad. The selection of each team will take place when this has been decided. A reserve list will be put in place for those players outside of the 20 to cover any withdrawals etc. If anyone would like to lead one of the teams, please get in touch in the next few days. With extra teams and players comes extra organisation with travel, accomodation, and help to keep things running smoothly at The Q Club.

Thanks for your interest so far and I hope players who have not yet sampled this great event will be enthusiastic about the chance to now do so.

I know there will be some who are disappointed they didn't make the A squad but this wasn't an easy task to pick the teams, at this stage we have decided that these squads are provisional and will be reviewed again and if anyone has a great start to the season and playing well we will look at this again with a final decision made after the league match on 23rd October.

If you have not booked your accommodation then please do so ASAP, the Premier Inn Charing Cross was available for £71.50 for Saturday 27th October.

If you have to drop out and have booked your accommodation then it is up to the reserve and the person that has dropped out to agree transfer of funds and pay the name change for room etc.

A further communication will be sent out about travel arrangements in the next couple of weeks.

Regards

Barry

I guess its understandable that some may be disappointed since selection has not been made going strictly by the rankings, however I agree that the teams should have a mix and that the captain has the right to select what in his opinion is his best team.

Good luck to all

Hi Derek I assume the disappointment you refer to is your own, given there are others with lower handicaps (Goodfellow) and others with similar handicaps who have played in previous years (Gall), so its likely there are others more disappointed than yourself. That said, those who were in the running for Team A will be the leading players in Team B and I am sure you and the others will relish that responsibility, particularly when you get into the arena. You will see for yourself, the weekend is more about the curry, beers, casino and banter than anything else and all 20 members of the two squads will experience this together. It’s a great weekend away with the lads - with some Snooker thrown in.....

Alec,

I hope it did not come across as a dig.

I was actually backing the fact that both teams need a mix so they are not just there as whipping boys.  I also support and appreciate that you cannot "dilute" to the point where neither team can go on and potentially win.  May be a bit of fun but I'm sure everyone still wants to win and so they should.

Guys who have supported the counties so far and proved themselves deserve every opportunity and younger players also need experience to develop.

As you rightly say its an opportunity to compete and enjoy a good night out and hopefully the 'B' team can help the 'A' team go on and win it this year.

Hi Derek,

If I’m honest it did a little bit I’m glad that was not the intention.

Having played in this comp for a couple of years now I can assure you the standard is not as high as you may anticipate and Team B from Aberdeen will definitely be in with a shout of qualifying from their group.

Every team has a couple of standout players and the rest are just ordinary guys who enjoy a game of snooker. Both our squads will be competitive and neither of our teams will be “whipping boys” of that there is no doubts. Keep you name in the mix until you know for sure what’s happening.
