Last weekend saw defending champions Aberdeen head to Glasgow aiming to secure a third successive Scottish County Snooker Championship.
With a record 12 teams from all over Scotland represented, the qualifying day was split between two venues - Q-Club and the Inn-Off Club in Renfrew. Playing at the Q-Club, the Aberdeen side had a relatively straightforward passage through their 5 group fixtures.
Opening with a 7-3 win over newcomers Ayrshire, comfortable 9-1 and 7-3 wins over Paisley and Cumbernauld B were secured, before being somewhat fortunate to scrape past an ever-improving Moray side 6-4 in a game where the score was level at 4-4 and the outcome could easily have been reversed. A long, tiring, opening day ended with a resounding 9-1 win over Glenrothes B, leaving Aberdeen with an unblemished 100% record, winning 38 frames for the loss of only 12. Marc Davis top scored with breaks of 62 and 54.
With all 12 teams now assembled at a packed Q-Club for finals day, a flattering 10-0 whitewash over Glenrothes A in the quarter-finals sent Aberdeen through to face a tough Cumbernauld A in the semi-finals.
John McCann put Aberdeen in a great position by overcoming an early 40 point deficit against reigning Scottish Amateur Champion, Michael Collumb, in the opening tie of the match. The lead was extended to 5-3, but the loss of the final two frames saw the match head into the County Championship’s equivalent of a penalty shootout - The Blueball Shootout.
This highly entertaining match decider involves all 10 members of each team trying to pot the blue from its spot into a corner pocket with the cue-ball placed anywhere in the ‘D’. With the first to 6 the target, only Derek Morrison scored from quite frankly, a pathetic Aberdeen effort, as from their 11th attempt, Cumbernauld secured their place in the final.
The final ended in the same manner. Cumbernauld and Edinburgh played out a 5-5 draw before the Lanarkshire side won the shootout. The weekend saw two centuries - 126 and 111 - both compiled by Michael Collumb.
Despite exiting the tournament without losing a match - in fact, a run stretching for 3 years - it was a great performance from an Aberdeen side where every player played their part. Special mention must go to Davie Goodfellow Jnr who was star man, winning all 7 of his matches - a truly outstanding performance.

You done a fantastic job over the weekend and with the amount of extra work this year due to covid restrictions and all the ground work getting all our players details sorted out with the organisers for us to take part I’d like to say on behalf of us all your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Quote from Monsoon111 on October 6, 2021, 7:52 pmGreat weekend, 110% given by all and being unbeaten in every match. Special mention to Kenny who not only played great but had all the organising and score keeping to organise. Who knows we may go for two teams next year…..so it’s important for all to keep practicing and most of all enjoying their snooker. Let’s hope Aberdeen can give it another go next year and get the title back🤞. Thanks to all the team for their efforts and representing Aberdeen Leagues in a professional manner with great sportsmanship…..👍 Also like to thank Duncan Will, Euan Laing and Davie Goidfellow Snr for travelling and supporting the team.
