Aberdeen retain Scottish Counties Title
The Aberdeen Snooker Team have successfully defended the Scottish County Championships held at the Q Club and Craigpark Masters in Glasgow.
Aberdeen began with convincing wins over Dumfries, Moray and Cumbernauld B before a hard fought 6-4 success against West of Scotland ensured they topped the group going into Sunday knockout matches.
Following an 8-2 quarter final win over Paisley, Aberdeen began well in the semi-final against Cumbernauld A and led 4-0 only to be pegged back by their opponents before Barry Smith managed to take out the 10th frame to win the match 6-4 and ensure a repeat of last season’s final against an Edinburgh side out for revenge.
The final was a very tight affair, Aberdeen went ahead 4-2 thanks to excellent wins by Mark Oaten and newcomers Davie Thomson & Fraser Allan but as expected Edinburgh weren’t going to give in and fought back to level the match at 4-4. The match was decided by an incredible final 2 frames, Derek Morrison winning despite requiring a snooker and then fluking the final black and captain Smith who held his nerve to pot a great long pink to take the title up to Aberdeen for another year. Each and every player had played well and that was pivotal to Aberdeen’s success but special mention has to go to Andy Gerrie for winning 8/8 frames over the weekend.
